The Republican Party is often referred to as the Grand Old Party or the GOP. Founded
Under the Oaks at Jackson, Michigan in 1854 by anti-slavery expansion activists and
modernizers, the Republican Party quickly surpassed the Whig Party as the principal
opposition to the Democratic Party. It first came to power in 1860 with the election of
Abraham Lincoln to the presidency and presided over the American Civil War and
Reconstruction. Today, the party supports a conservative and neoconservative
platform.
The Republican Party is currently the second largest party with 55 million registered
voters as of 2004, encompassing roughly one-third of the electorate. Former President,
George W. Bush, was the 19th Republican to hold that office. Republicans currently fill a
minority of seats in both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives,
hold a minority of state governorships, and control a minority of state legislatures.
For the Presidential race of 2008, the party's nominees were Senator John McCain, of
Arizona, for President and Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin for Vice-President. The
Republicans lost at the polls by the Democratic Party.
The Democratic Party is the oldest political party in continuous operation in the United States
and it is one of the oldest parties in the world.
The Democratic Party traces its origins to the Democratic-Republican Party, founded by
Thomas Jefferson in 1792. However, the modern Democratic party truly arose in the 1830s,
with the election of Andrew Jackson. Since the division of the Republican Party in the
election of 1912, it has consistently positioned itself to the left of the Republican Party in
economic issues and libertarian on social matters. The economically activist philosophy of
Franklin D. Roosevelt, which has strongly influenced American liberalism, has shaped much
of the party's economic agenda since 1932. Roosevelt's New Deal coalition usually controlled
the national government until the 1970s.
Since 2004, it has been the largest party. Since the 2006 midterm elections, the Democratic
Party is the majority party for Congress; the party holds an outright majority in the House of
Representatives and the Democratic caucus (including two independents) constitutes a
majority in the United States Senate. Democrats also hold a majority of state governorships
and control a plurality of state legislatures.
The party's nominee for President in the 2008 election was Senator Barack Obama who was
elected President of the United States after winning the November 4, 2008 election.
